One of the most important new art museums in the world is right here in New Orleans—the Ogden Museum of Southern Art. Opening it doors in 2003, the museum features Roger Ogden’s collection of Southern art from the 18th century to present day, as well as other Southern art that the museum has acquired. The museum has been an amazing asset to the community. On Oct. 20, the museum is hosting its “O What a Night Gala” benefit at the museum and the Contemporary Arts Center.

Bev is with Blaine Kern Sr., who just started the Krewe of Boo, which benefits the First Responders Fund, created to address the challenges facing police, fire and EMS departments in the Greater New Orleans area.  Its first priority is housing. The Krewe is hosting a costume party, “Halloween Expose Bash” on Oct. 31 to kick off this new event. Next year, there will be a parade and a party. It’s only $350 to become a charter member of the Krewe. For more information or tickets, call 394-5632 or go to www.kreweofboo.org.

Co-chairs Sallee Benjamin and Vesta Fort, Trustee chair Julia Reed and director Rick Gruber, as well as the gala committee have a busy night planned: cocktails, silent
auction and a live auction featuring art from some of the region’s preeminent artists. There will also be a tribute to Art Neville featuring local musicians, so there is sure
be lots of dancing! So come out to support this city treasure.

I am so thrilled to feature three brave cancer survivors who are an inspiration to all: Mimi Heebe, Darryl Berger Jr. and Irma Thomas. This disease has touched almost everyone and the money that has been raised for research to eradicate it has been
phenomenal. The stories of these survivors give us hope and courage. If you haven’t had a check-up recently, you need to go.

Another sort of inspiration can be found with Junior Achievement of Greater New Orleans “Rising Stars,” who are business leaders under the age of 40. This year’s
honorees are chef John Besh, New Orleans Saints owner Rita Benson LeBlanc, Fast Tax Service owner Philip Nimmo, Blessey Marine Services president Clark Todd, and SDT Waste and Debris Services owner Sidney Torres IV. These stellar leaders will
be honored at a gala on Nov. 10. But, please go ahead and read about their
accomplishments in the magazine’s Junior Achievement special section.

It’s hard to believe that the holidays are almost here, so check out “Entertaining Possibilities” for good ideas and sources for your seasonal soirée.

Speaking of the holidays, I’m heading to Logan Howcott’s new shop Cornelia, located in the plaza on the corner of Magazine Street and Louisiana Avenue, for something spectacular to wear for parties—even for every day! You’ll think you’re in a Soho boutique full of great pieces and a selection of chic accessories—all at a great price point. I bought there the red top I’m wearing for this column’s photo. The store carries a number of pieces you won’t find anywhere else.

The Junior League of New Orleans is gearing up for the season with a Holiday Shopping Card that you definitely want to get now and give to all of your friends. From Nov. 2 to 11, the shopping card—which costs $50—allows the holder a 20
percent discount at participating stores. The list is on www.jlno.org, and you can order your card online, as well as from a Junior League member. Proceeds benefit the league’s programs benefiting children’s education. We must all do our part to improve the city’s public education system, so buy lots of cards.
Have a fun and safe October and Halloween!
