Summer is over (though not the hot weather) and exciting events are happening this fall. One of them is the New Orleans Film Festival Gala on Oct. 11 at Republic. The party raises funds for the New Orleans Film Society, which hosts its 18th annual New Orleans Film Festival, Oct. 11 to 18. The red carpet will be rolled out for this chic soirée featuring great music, food and a few surprises. Thanks to our cover models: event producer Alexa Georges, event chair Roger Wilson, NOFS executive director Ali Duffey, Republic co-owner Robert LeBlanc and NOFS board president Ellen Johnson. More kudos to the WYES-TV/Channel 12 studio for allowing us to shoot the cover there, as well as station’s Paul Combel, who without his help this shoot wouldn’t have been possible.

Bev (third from left) at Sophie B. Wright Charter School with Assistant Principal Tiranus Edwards, Christian Brewington (grade 8), Frederick Lowe (grade 4) and Stormie Hogue (grade 6). Please sign up to tutor at any public, charter or recovery school near you. Bev is tutoring at Sophie B. Wright and at Samuel Green charter schools. All of us can make a difference in the lives of our children!

More worthy events can be found in our “Registry of Charitable Events Fall/Winter 2007.” As you will see by all the event listings, New Orleans knows how to throw a party with a purpose. If your event is not on the list for October to December, please send that information to: Sue Strachan, St. Charles Avenue magazine, 110 Veterans Blvd., Ste. 123, Metairie, La. 70005.

And don’t forget to head to Rubenstein’s to find the perfect party ensemble.
I just got back and bought two chic outfits! The store has top designer fashions for men and women—fabulous clothing, accessories, shoes and more. This family-owned business—open since 1924—is known for its distinguished brands, custom shirts and suits, personal service, free delivery and valet parking. David Rubenstein and Allison Rubenstein Marshall explain their $2 million dollar renovation to the store on the corner of St. Charles Avenue and Canal Street as a total commitment to the viability of New Orleans and their belief in this great city! Go see them at the store today.

The fall fashion season is upon us, and it is the time of year when the magazine unveils who we think the city’s most fashionable citizens are. Who’s in fashion
for 2007? Rebecca Singley, Sean Yseult, Freddy Perriott, Penny Francis and Michael Kochie—all of who have their own distinct sense of style and join a list of prestigious style-setters the magazine has previously featured.

Speaking of fashion, turn to “What’s Hot for Fall Fashion Accessories,” which is full of some of the biggest trends for the season. (Hint: Think python.)

Magazine Street is a buzz with great places to eat, shop and more. “A Map to the Stars of Magazine Street” is your guide to those that shine brightly.

Every time I drive by Magnolia Mansion on the corner of Jackson Avenue and Prytania Street (downtown, lake side), I am so impressed. The mansion can hold a small intimate event, or a wedding reception or party for up to 600. It has its own caterer, but allows preferred outside caterers. There are complete wedding planning services and accommodations, including nine guest rooms so the whole wedding party can be together. Even last-minute weddings or parties can be made stress free! Call Holly Vest at 915-5820 and she can help you with everything.

Now that school has started, one of the most important things you can do is to
volunteer to teach a child to read. Please go to a public, recovery or charter school near you and offer your time (see my photo). STAIR (Start the Adventure in Reading) is up and running (call 899-0820) as well as programs offered by churches.
