The magazine is thrilled to feature Overture to the Cultural Season’s “Cultural Second Line” gala on the cover this month. Many thanks to gala co-chairs Lanier Hosford and Townsend Jordan, J. Michael Brown of First Bank and Trust (the event’s underwriter), patron party chair Jacquelyn Clarkson, and Eric Martinez of the Marriott Hotel, which is underwriting the catering, for posing on the cover and for their hard work to make this event happen. This black-tie soirée is Sept. 8 at the New Orleans Museum of Art and will feature music by Deacon John, silent and live auctions, and delicious food from the Marriott. Overture is an umbrella organization for the arts that supports these groups and awards scholarships and endowments to deserving young students to continue their studies in the arts.

Bev is with event co-chairs Odom and Mimi Heebe for the American Cancer Society’s “Hope Gala.” The party is Aug. 18 at the Shops at Canal Place and will have dining, cocktails, and live and silent auctions. The group will also present its Spirit Award to area physicians, cancer survivors and other members of the community who have made significant contributions to the fight against cancer. For information or tickets, call 219-2295.

Our special wedding section features six fabulous weddings, including my son Ford Church who married Jessica Conway in October 2006. Each one is unique and you will get ideas and tips by reading each story beautifully written by
talented writer Judi Russell.

I can’t believe that school is almost here, so we’re going to help you with “What’s Hot for Back to School,” which showcases great clothing and accessories for children. And don’t forget to check out the great stores on Metairie Road
featured in “Just Down the Street.”

Speaking of shopping, I just got back from Magazine Street and went into the very chic Ropa Fashion Loft at 4228 Magazine St. It has trendy but sophisticated clothes and accessories, as well as some intimate apparel at great price points.  I got the cutest top and a fabulous dress—be sure to stop by.

For all of you who might need a special shoe that is comfortable and stylish,
be sure to visit physical therapist Gini Davis at Perfect Fit Shoes, located at the corner of Transcontinental and West Esplanade. The store carries Thierry Rabotin, Sanita clogs and La Plume—great styles that make your feet perfectly happy whether at a party or a long day at work. Davis can accommodate all sizes, widths and shapes!

Now that summer is near the end, please think about how you can volunteer
to help our city rebound! If you are a teacher, a nurse, doctor or accountant, the city’s schools—public, private and parochial—need you! Education is the key to our future, so get involved.
